The Östgöta gulärt variety belongs to traditional landraces and is preserved in the collection of the Nordic Genetic Resource Center. Historically, it was used in Sweden as soup pea and served as starting material for breeding new commercial varieties in the early 20th century.
The plant is characterized by a tall climbing growth habit, with stem height reaching 1.5–2.0 meters. The variety belongs to leaf types, having regular leaves and tendrils. Due to the significant stem height, the use of supports or mixed cropping practice is recommended for cultivation.
