The variety belongs to the "common" type of Poa pratensis and is not a product of modern breeding. It possesses an upright growth habit and has traditionally been used both for creating pastures and for establishing general-purpose lawns.

The plant demonstrates good ability to form sod through rhizomes. Compared to modern elite varieties, Newport is less demanding in terms of maintenance, yet it often exhibits susceptibility to Helminthosporium.
