The variety is a selection form of Armeniaca vulgaris, selected within the breeding program in Lednice. It acts as a clone of the 'Magyar legjobb' variety and inherits its biological traits adapted to the conditions of Central Europe.

The fruits of the variety contain high concentrations of lactones, which determine a pronounced fruity aroma. The average weight of one fruit is about 52 g; the ripening period falls in early July.

The variety possesses frost resistance of young fruits. In scientific studies, Marlen is used for comparative analysis of resistance to phytoplasma diseases and Plum pox virus.
