The Areko variety (breeding number 92/31-22) was developed as a result of a breeding program in Germany. The tree is characterized by moderate vigor, good branching, and forms a semi-upright crown.
The fruits are large, reaching 28–30 mm in diameter, have a heart shape and a dark burgundy, almost black color with glossy skin. The dense, small-celled flesh is juicy, has an aromatic flavor and a harmonious balance of sugar and acid, with a dry matter content of approximately 19.3% on the Brix scale.
The ripening period of the variety belongs to the mid-late category, falling between the ripening of Kordia and Regina varieties.
