The variety is of German origin and is often grouped with other old varieties in genetic research. Genetic analysis of the S-genotype identified Nafrina as belonging to the S3S6 type. Information on the origin of the variety in literature remains debatable, and data on parental forms require clarification.

The plant belongs to the category of varieties with relatively low chilling requirements (about 500–550 hours at temperatures below 7 °C), which makes it an object of study for cultivation in subtropical conditions. An apical dominance effect is observed in shoot development, and cuttings are prone to earlier sprouting of lateral buds compared to apical ones.
