The variety was obtained as a result of open pollination of the variety "Schooldays" at the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station. In historical scientific publications of the 1970s–80s, the variety was mentioned in the context of research on yield and disease resistance.
Data from tests of that period indicate that the variety was not fully immune to bacterial spot. In modern commercial catalogs, the variety is practically not found; the frequently occurring confusion is linked to the similarity of the names "Marpride" and the modern variety "Royal Pride".
