Maruja is a group of local populations formed through long-term selection by farmers. Maruja Argos represents a specific genotype or breeding selection within this cultivar type, studied by scientific institutes for the conservation of genetic resources.
The fruit of this variety is characterized by large size, round or heart shape, and yellow-orange skin with a red blush. The flesh is firm, yellow with intense red coloration around the pit, and possesses a distinct aroma. The variety belongs to the group of the earliest local Spanish peaches.
Traditionally, the variety is grown for local consumption and valued for its high taste quality. In scientific studies, this cultivar type is used as an object for studying adaptation to climatic conditions and resistance to diseases, including Plum pox virus.
