The historical variety Shasta, introduced in 1941, is a canning type with a clingstone pit. Its morphological features include lanceolate leaves with a slightly wavy margin.
The modern variety Sweet Shasta is a yellow-fleshed freestone peach with a sweet, low-acidity flavor and a ripening period in late June to early July. The fruit are large, have an intense red skin coloration covering 80–90% of the surface, the chill requirement is approximately 350 hours, and resistance to leaf curl is rated as high.
