Black Down
ActiveRibes nigrum L. · Blackcurrant
University of Bristol L Asthom (GB)
10 August 2026
The plant is a shrub reaching a height of about 1.5 meters. In mature specimens aged 3–5 years, there is a tendency for shoots to lodge under the weight of the crop, which complicates maintenance.
The berries of the variety are distinguished by their large size and almost sweet taste, suitable for fresh consumption and processing. Yield is estimated as low. Information regarding disease resistance is contradictory: in a number of cases, resistance to powdery mildew is mentioned, in others — susceptibility to rots.
