Black Down
ActiveRibes nigrum L. · Blackcurrant
University of Bristol L Asthom (GB)
10 August 2026
The variety is a green-fruited form of blackcurrant. The fruits remain yellow-green and translucent even at full maturity. The bush reaches a height of 1.0–1.5 m and has an oval or wide-spreading crown.
The berries, weighing 1.0–1.5 g, have a sweet-tart taste and thin skin, and are prone to shattering after ripening. The variety is self-fertile, possesses high winter hardiness down to –34...–35°C, and is resistant to powdery mildew and the blackcurrant gall mite.
Yield is up to 3 kg per bush, with fruiting beginning 3–4 years after planting. The green color of the berries makes them less attractive to birds compared to dark-fruited varieties.
