The name kirsebærribs was historically applied to varieties with large berries, such as Fertile de Palluau, Chenonceaux and Hâtive de Bertin. These forms were botanically associated with the species Ribes sativum, which was valued for fruit size.
During agronomic trials from 1933–1940, it was noted that representatives of this group possessed high susceptibility to fungal leaf spots. This led to premature leaf drop and a decrease in yield, which is why such forms are practically not found at present.
