The plant is vigorous and is characterized by high yield and good winter hardiness. The variety has an early maturity group.

The berries are large, red, and almost smooth, with slight pubescence or bristles. The variety is considered relatively resistant to American powdery mildew.

Maurers Sämling is used as a reference variety when conducting international examinations for distinctness, uniformity, and stability of gooseberry.
