Josta is a vigorous spreading shrub 1.5–2 m in height and diameter, consisting of 15–20 branches of different ages. The plant's shoots are strong and have no thorns. Large glossy dark green leaves resemble currant leaves in shape but are almost devoid of their specific aroma.
Fruits of dark purple or black color are gathered in clusters of 3–5 and have an average weight of 3–5 g. The berries have a sweet and sour taste with muscat notes and thick skin. The harvest ripening period occurs at the end of July, and the bush is capable of bearing fruit for up to 20–30 years.
The crop is frost-resistant, withstands temperatures down to –30 °C, and shows resistance to anthracnose, powdery mildew, rust, and the blackcurrant gall mite. Josta is used as a fruit and berry crop for fresh consumption and processing, as well as an ornamental plant for hedges.
