The variety was developed by breeder Derek L. Jennings as a result of crossing an Australian-origin selection and an unnamed summer-bearing sample. Joan Squire is the genetic parent of the Joan J variety.
It belongs to the category of early autumn-bearing varieties. During the period of its active use in commercial horticulture, the variety's fruits were criticized for insufficient suitability for long-distance transport; at present, the variety is considered less in demand.
