The plant is a perennial shrub with vigorous biennial shoots. Stems can reach three meters in height when growing vertically and up to 6–12 meters when spreading horizontally, actively clinging to supports. The surface of the shoots is covered with strong thorns.
Leaves on first-year shoots are usually palmate (five-lobed), while on fruiting second-year shoots they are trifoliate. A distinctive feature is the underside of the leaf, which is covered with dense white felt-like pubescence. The berries are aggregate drupes that ripen from August to October.
The species possesses high hardiness and is capable of apomictic reproduction, in which seeds are formed without pollination. Due to its aggressive spread, the plant is recognized as invasive in many regions of the world, despite its historical use as a berry crop.
