The variety Balharblu, known under the trade name Harlequin Blue, is an herbaceous perennial forming dense compact clumps 30–45 cm in height. The plant possesses delicate grayish-green leaves and capitate inflorescences of a lavender-blue shade.

The plant is drought-tolerant after establishment and adapts well to various soil types, provided that good drainage is ensured. For full development and the prevention of root rots, the variety requires a sunny location.
