The Pluto variety was used in scientific research on European rye, in particular, to study the genetic variation of resistance to ergot, Claviceps purpurea. Its gene pool was used as a basis for breeding programs.
During the 2000s, the Pluto variety was regularly included in variety testing programs as a standard sample for assessing grain quality and other agronomic characteristics. Detailed morphological descriptions of the plant are absent in open publications.
