The Trico variety was created as part of the work of the Swedish Seed Association during a period of intensive oilseed breeding. It was officially grown in Sweden for seventeen years, starting in 1967.

Currently, the variety is considered archival and is absent from current commercial seed catalogs. Detailed agronomic characteristics and morphological descriptions of the plant are not presented in modern publications.
