The Monterey variety belongs to the smooth-leaf spinach group. It is oriented toward professional cultivation, in particular for producing young leaves used in salad mixes.

A key characteristic of the variety is high resistance to spinach downy mildew (Peronospora farinosa f. sp. spinaciae). The variety demonstrates resistance to pathogen races Pfs: 1–15 and 17.
