Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety was obtained as a result of complex hybridization (Lerma Rojo × Norin 10-Brevor) × [(Yaktana 54 × Norin 10-Brevor) × Andes]. It belongs to spring forms adapted for regions with autumn or winter sowing. The plant is characterized as short-strawed and is used as a general-purpose variety for flour production and as a genetic marker.

The grain has a low protein concentration and weak gluten, which makes it unsuitable for bread baking, but it provides a good flour yield during milling. The variety shows resistance to stripe rust and barley yellow dwarf virus. Due to the presence of a suppressor gene that inhibits the action of the Lr37 gene, the variety may exhibit susceptibility to leaf rust.

The variety has become widespread and is known in a number of countries under other names, including Karamu, Mexicani, Turpin 4, SNA-1 and Moghan-1. The genetic material of the variety served as a basis for creating a number of new lines and varieties, such as Lassik.
