Variety description

10 August 2026

The term Chamorro was historically used in Spain to designate local awnless varieties. These plants are not a product of modern breeding, but represent a collection of local forms adapted to the conditions of specific regions, such as Chamorro de Humanes or Chamorro de Villadiego.

This group of varieties belongs to winter forms and is characterized by the absence of awns on the ears. In scientific research, these varieties are considered a valuable source of genetic diversity possessing an increased content of iron and zinc in the grain; however, in terms of yield, they are inferior to modern breeding varieties.
