Champlein is a winter soft wheat that was actively cultivated in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. The variety was characterized as relatively short-stemmed, which ensured lodging resistance and high productivity for its time.
The variety possesses limited winter hardiness compared to a number of specialized resistant varieties and exhibits susceptibility to certain fungal diseases. Due to the study of its genetic traits, it is now primarily used in scientific research as a control sample.
The grain of the variety was distinguished by good baking qualities, which ensured its popularity in commercial production. In breeding collection documentation, the variety is often associated with the Benoist company, which acted as its originator or distributor.
