The winter soft wheat variety Elpa is characterized by a short vernalization period. It is widely represented in European variety testing materials and variety lists from the early 2000s.

In scientific literature, the variety was used to analyze baking qualities, including the study of protein composition and high-molecular-weight glutenin subunits. The variety was also used as a European genotype in breeding programs.
