The variety is a traditional local type of wheat from the island of Öland. Initially, the variety's genetic material included a mixture of wheat and spelt, from which pure lines were selected through breeding, which are cultivated today in Northern Europe. The plant is tall, reaching a height of 80 to 120 cm.
This variety can be grown as both a winter and spring form, showing signs of late maturity in northern regions. The ear length is 11–12 cm; the ears are predominantly awnless, but short awns up to 3 cm may be present. The variety is adapted to organic farming methods and is capable of growing on poor soils.
