The variety was obtained by crossing genetic material from Mex, 198 and Maristella. It belongs to the category of the first semi-dwarf durum wheat varieties introduced into production in Italy in the 1970s.

The variety is characterized by a high level of yield and production stability. The grain is distinguished by its small size; the quality of pasta products is assessed as medium or medium-low, while the crude protein content reaches 15.8%.

Karel was created with adaptation to the climatic conditions of Southern Italy and drought tolerance in mind. The variety was studied by breeders in the context of resistance to various diseases.
