The variety is derived from the Mexicali 75 variety. It belongs to the group of semi-dwarf wheats, which provided it with increased resistance to lodging. In terms of breeding timeline, the variety is classified as intermediate, released between 1950 and 1985.

In the 1980s, the variety dominated the Spanish market, occupying up to 90% of the durum wheat cultivated area. The grain of this variety was traditionally used for the production of pasta. In subsequent decades, the variety was gradually replaced by more modern breeding achievements.
