The variety is a landrace historically widespread in the Portuguese regions of Alentejo and Ribatejo. Currently, it is classified as a conservation variety and is used for the preservation of genetic diversity.

The plant is characterized by good adaptability to low soil fertility and unstable rainfall patterns. The variety exhibits resistance to certain races of stem rust and is responsive to interaction with beneficial soil bacteria.

The grain of this variety is characterized by vitreousness. Historically, it was valued for high baking qualities suitable for the production of pasta and traditional sourdough bread.
