The variety is a traditional folk variety of Spanish origin, formed during long-term selection. Various variations of the name are found in the literature, such as Valenciano negro, Valenciano blanco, Valenciano colorado, and Valenciano canhueco, which indicates the presence of a complex of local forms.

Standardized agronomic characteristics of the variety are absent. Studies of the biochemical characteristics of the grain show high heterogeneity of the composition, in particular regarding the content of toxic epitopes and fructans. The variety is used mainly in breeding work and for the preservation of genetic diversity.
