The variety is the result of folk selection and has been known since the 15th century; its origin is the eastern part of Spain. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth and well-ripening shoots. The leaves are dark green, matte, five-lobed, with dense bristly-webby pubescence on the underside.
The bunches are medium or large in size, conical, and dense. The berries are blue-violet, medium or large, round or flattened. The variety exhibits high drought tolerance, low susceptibility to downy mildew and powdery mildew, and is resistant to gray mold.
It is used for the production of red, rosé, and sparkling wines, as well as grape concentrate. Wines from BOBAL are distinguished by their rich color and full body; they are often used in blends to improve the structure and color of other wines due to the thick skin of the berries, which is rich in anthocyanins.
