The variety, also known by the breeding number Gm 7225-8, was obtained by crossing the varieties Deckrot and Blauer Portugieser. The vines have medium vigor with upright shoot growth and low lateral shoot formation. The variety shows increased resistance to winter frosts compared to the Portugieser variety.

Morphologically, the plant is characterized by medium-sized 3-5-lobed leaves and shouldered clusters. The round, medium-sized berries contain a high amount of pigment. The variety is suitable for standard and wide-row planting systems.

The winemaking profile of the variety suggests its use as an additive (usually up to 5%) to wines from colorless varieties to improve color without altering the taste. Wines from pure Dakapo are characterized by high strength, fullness, and pronounced tannin levels.
