The variety is a cross between Pinot Gris and Teinturier du Cher. The plant has bisexual flowers, which ensures self-pollination, and belongs to mid-season maturity varieties.
Deckrot is classified as a "teinturier" (dyer) variety intended for addition to red wines in small proportions to increase color intensity. Wine from this variety is characterized by pronounced acidity and a very dark, saturated red hue.
