The variety is autochthonous to Galicia and northern Portugal. The plant has high vigor and is traditionally trained on pergolas. Morphologically, the variety is characterized by small or medium dense clusters and medium-sized berries with thick dark blue skin and juicy pulp.
A late-ripening variety, susceptible to downy mildew and powdery mildew, prefers cool, fresh soils. Wines produced from it are characterized by moderate alcohol content, medium body and tannin levels, and are often used in blends, although varietal versions also exist.
