The variety is a hybrid consisting of 97% Vitis vinifera genes and 3% Vitis arizonica and Vitis rupestris genes. Its pedigree includes Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The variety is characterized by mid-season ripening and relatively late flowering.

The berries are black and medium in size; the bunches are relatively large and well-filled. The plant is capable of bearing fruit when pruned to a renewal spur, but shows greater productivity with cane pruning; yield is moderately low. The variety possesses high resistance to Pierce's disease.

Wine from this variety has a medium to full body, moderate acidity, and structured tannins. The aromatic profile includes notes of black berries, spices, cedar, tobacco, chocolate, and earthy nuances.
