The variety is ancient and shares genetic identity with a number of varieties, including Tinta Caiada, Carenisca, and Carcajolo Noir. The plant has perfect flowers, low yield, and low winter hardiness. The variety is sensitive to fungal diseases and Botrytis cinerea infection, which is caused by the high density of the bunches.

Morphologically, the variety is characterized by rounded, five-lobed leaves with dense pubescence on the underside. The bunches are small or medium in size, conical in shape. The berries are medium-sized, oval, dark blue in color, and covered with a thick waxy bloom.

Wines made from Parraleta possess deep color, high acidity, and pronounced tannins. The aroma is dominated by notes of dark fruits, spices, and earthy undertones. The variety is used both for creating varietal wines and for adding structure and aroma to blended wines.
