The variety has an upright shoot growth habit. Bunches and berries are of medium size. The grape is distinguished by strong growth vigor, early bud break, and late ripening of fruit, which determines specific requirements for the vineyard site.

During cultivation, the variety demonstrates good fruit set and wood maturation rates. Yield is average; sugar content in the must varies from medium to high with medium to high acidity levels.

Sulmer is intended exclusively for the production of red wines. In winemaking practice, it is used as an alternative to the Lemberger variety, producing wines with a powerful character.
