The Csanád variety, also known as GK Csanád, was developed at the Research Institute for Viticulture and Enology of the University of Pécs. In breeding documentation, it is designated by the code 13-3/6 and is classified as an interspecific variety (PIWI) intended for wine production.

Breeding of the variety was aimed at achieving a high degree of resistance to the main fungal pathogens of grapes: downy mildew and powdery mildew. This variety is intended for ecologically oriented viticulture, allowing for a reduction in the use of chemical plant protection products.
