The variety is ancient, its exact origin is unknown. Due to historical confusion, it has had many synonyms, including Cape Riesling, Paarl Riesling, and Clare Riesling. The vines are characterized by vigorous growth, leaves are medium, five-lobed with long hairs on the main veins.
Bunches are medium-sized, dense, with small rounded berries. The variety is mid-season and low-yielding. The shoots are brittle and prone to wind damage, the berries are susceptible to sunburn, and the variety itself is extremely susceptible to powdery mildew, downy mildew, and gray mold.
The use of the variety is aimed mainly at the production of elegant, aromatic white wines with a neutral character and herbaceous notes, capable of aging. In rare cases, it can be used as a table grape.
