Crljenak Kaštelanski is an ancient variety whose origin has been confirmed by molecular genetic studies. It is not a product of artificial selection and serves as an ancestor for a number of local varieties, such as Plavac Mali.

The variety is classified as a wine grape and is well-adapted to the Mediterranean climate. It possesses a tendency for high sugar accumulation and the formation of dense phenolic compounds, which provides the wines with expressive aromas of dark berries and spices.
