The variety has an ancient history in the Goriška Brda region of Slovenia and adjacent parts of Italy. It is a wine grape variety for the production of red wines, which are distinguished by a deep ruby color, balanced tannins, pronounced acidity, and aromas of black pepper and berries.
The names Pokalca or Schioppettino are associated with the variety's characteristic tendency of the berries to crack during the ripening period. Due to this feature, cultivation of the variety requires a careful approach. The variety is included in official national variety lists.
