Crnjenak is not an independent variety in the generally accepted sense, but acts as a synonym for several different grape varieties of the species Vitis vinifera L. widespread in Croatia. In literature and official registries, this name may refer to the Plavac Mali variety or the Glavinuša variety, also known as Okatac crni.
This plant is classified as a wine grape variety intended for the production of red wines. The plants have hermaphroditic flowers; however, the exact morphological characteristics and agrotechnical requirements depend on which specific variety is concealed behind this name, as in old ampelographic sources the term could be applied to various local populations.
