The variety is of Italian origin from the Veneto region and has been known since the 17th century. The name "Cruina" in the Veronese dialect is associated with the meaning "unripe," which is due to the late ripening period of the grapes. It is a wine variety that serves as the basis for the production of Valpolicella, Bardolino, and Amarone wines.
The leaves of the variety are medium or large in size, five-lobed. The clusters are dense, conical in shape. The berries are dark purple, almost black in color, covered with a thick skin, which allows them to be used for drying (appassimento). The variety has good frost resistance, however, it is sensitive to drought and susceptible to downy mildew.
Wines from this variety have high acidity and medium tannins. Their aroma is dominated by notes of ripe fruits and cherries; spicy and balsamic shades appear during aging. The variety should be distinguished from Corvinone, which is a separate plant.
