Variety description

The plant is an epiphyte with a basal rosette of smooth green leaves, reaching a height of 30–40 cm. A key feature of the variety is the spike-shaped inflorescence with bracts of a dark burgundy, red, or almost black shade, which retains its decorative quality for several months.

The variety originated as a mutation of Vriesea «Christiane». Color forms marketed under the names «Cathy P», «Cathy Red», and «Cathy Violet» are found in trade. Like other members of the genus, the plant gradually dies off after flowering, being replaced by daughter offsets at the base.
