The Lo87602 line possesses the stay-green trait, which is controlled by a single dominant gene. At physiological maturity, the plant maintains a high water and chlorophyll content in the leaves and also exhibits an increased level of sucrose in the stalk.
High sucrose content provides resistance to stalk rot pathogens. The husks, cobs, and grains of this line are characterized by an increased protein content. The material is used for quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping and in breeding programs to improve the characteristics of commercial varieties.
