The variety is a traditional heirloom type that formed in the mountain conditions of the Belluno province from the end of the 19th century. The plant is well adapted to the local climate and requires less fertilizer and water compared to modern hybrids.
A distinctive feature of the variety is the grain shape with a pointed tip resembling a beak, which is reflected in the name, meaning "prickly" in the local dialect. The ears are thin with white cobs; the grains have a bright orange color and belong to the flint type.
Flour from this variety has a rich color with dark specks, a high content of proteins and fats, as well as pronounced absorbent properties, which allows for obtaining flavorful and dense polenta.
