Maize anthracnose

A fungal disease of maize caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum graminicola, affecting all plant organs. It manifests as leaf spotting and severe stalk rot, leading to lodging of crops.

The causative agent of maize anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum graminicola (anamorph) or Glomerella graminicola (teleomorph). The pathogen infects leaves, stalks, leaf sheaths, kernels, tassels, and roots of the plant, developing most intensely under conditions of high humidity.

The disease manifests in two main forms. Leaf spotting is characterized by the appearance of elongated necrotic lesions with a bright margin, which reduces the photosynthetic area. Stalk rot is considered the more damaging form: it is accompanied by the blackening of surface tissues and the destruction of the stalk pith, causing premature wilting and lodging of the plants.
