The causative agent of the disease in melon is the fungus Ascochyta cucumis (synonym Ascochyta melonis), which has an ascomycete stage, Didymella bryoniae. The pathogen affects all parts of the plant, manifesting on leaves as large yellow-brown spots with a chlorotic halo, which eventually merge, causing the leaf blade to die.
Elongated grayish or brown spots form on the stems, often accompanied by characteristic gummosis and tissue cracking. Affected fruits take on a 'boiled' appearance and shrivel. An important diagnostic sign of the disease is the formation of numerous black pycnidia of the fungus on all damaged tissues.
