A fungal disease of small-seeded fava bean caused by Ascochyta fabae, affecting all above-ground plant organs and transmitted via seeds.

The primary pathogen of Ascochyta blight in fava bean is the fungus Ascochyta fabae Speg.; the species Ascochyta boltshauseri Sacc. is also encountered. The pathogens are highly specialized and do not infect other legume species. The infection affects leaves, stems, and pods, manifesting as large concentric spots or spots with a dark margin, in the center of which black pycnidia develop. The fungus persists and is transmitted through seeds, causing them to become wrinkled and reducing their germination capacity.
Physiological specialization with variations in isolate aggressiveness has been established within the pathogen population. Breeding for resistance is complicated by the complex inheritance of the trait. Studies confirm the existence of both lines with dominant group resistance genes and lines with race-specific resistance genes. Due to insufficient identification of genetic defense mechanisms, molecular markers linked to quantitative trait loci (QTLs) are actively used in breeding.
