Ascochyta blight

Ascochyta

Ascochyta blight is a group of fungal plant diseases characterized by the appearance of spots with punctate sporulation on leaves, stems, and pods. The disease significantly reduces seed germination and crop productivity, causing yield losses of up to 50% or more.

Mentioned in descriptions 821 varieties reference book.

Ascochyta blight manifests as spots of varying color — from light brown with a dark rim to dark brown with a depressed center. A characteristic diagnostic sign of the infection is the presence of small black dots in the center of the spots, called pycnidia. The infection affects the above-ground organs of plants, leading to thinning of seedlings, stem breakage, and underdevelopment of fruits.

The development of the pathogen depends on the presence of infection in the soil, on plant residues or seeds, as well as on environmental conditions. Optimal conditions for the fungus are high air humidity above 90% and a temperature range from +16 to +25°C. Factors contributing to the spread of the disease include prolonged rains, dense sowing, and excessive nitrogen nutrition, while temperatures above +30°C slow down or stop the development of the disease.

The assessment of variety resistance in variety trials is carried out on an artificial or provocative infection background created by irrigation and regulation of plant density. During the breeding process, the degree of organ damage, yield stability under different infection loads, and plant homeostaticity are analyzed, i.e., their genetic ability to maintain productivity when exposed to the pathogen and environmental stress factors.
