A fungal disease of fava bean (Vicia faba) caused by the specialized pathogen Ascochyta fabae (teleomorph Didymella fabae), which infects the aerial parts of the plant.

The causal agent Ascochyta fabae is a highly specialized pathogen of fava bean. On leaves, the disease manifests as circular, depressed spots of a dark chocolate or brown color. Deep ulcerative lesions form on stems and pods, and deep penetration of the infection into the pods leads to the formation of dark spots on the seeds. A key diagnostic feature distinguishing ascochyta blight from chocolate spot is the appearance of small black dots—pycnidia—in the center of the affected areas.
The pathogen population is divided into pathogenicity groups (PG), ranging from low-virulence (PG-1) to aggressive (PG-3) strains capable of overcoming the resistance of various cultivars. Breeding for resistance is complicated by the complex inheritance of the trait. Instead of classic resistance genes, modern programs use QTL markers for the pyramiding of genome regions that provide protection to the crop.
