The causal agent of the disease is the fungus Ascochyta sojaecola Abramov (synonym Ascochyta phaseolorum Sacc.). The infection manifests on cotyledons as dark brown spots and ulcers; on leaves, large circular spots with a light center and a dark margin form, often leading to tissue necrosis.
On stems, the disease appears as longitudinal whitish streaks and dark spotting, while infection of the pods leads to their discoloration and the formation of shriveled seeds. A characteristic diagnostic feature of the pathogen is the appearance of black dots — pycnidia — on the affected tissues, arranged primarily in concentric circles.
